Station to Station

station to station
searching the platform
with wires scratching at the eyes
fragmenting thoughts
of the days gone by
all that seemed so important to me
station to stationary
and suddenly, last summer
my mind arrives at the time
the date - the day
before you came

Degenerate trash, huh? I know what you mean...

Madonna fights at LA premiere of Truth or Dare with Vanilla Ice doing his best Robert Morris Ad impression (image from the week of the quote)
When doing research on censorship in art I came across an article by Richard Burt called ‘"Degenerate 'Art' ": Public Aesthetics and the Simulation of Censorship in Post-liberal Los Angeles and Berlin’ in his book: The Administration of Aesthetics (1994). He used a Madonna quote on ‘degenerate art’, as an example of the conflation of the realms of high and low art in Los Angeles and modern age censorship. Given Madonna’s reputation for controversy at this point it kinda makes sense – while it being a reminder of M's great quotes of old:
During a seventy-minute tour of the LACMA recreation of the 1937 Nazi exhibition of “Degenerate Art”, curator Stephanie Barron explained to Madonna that the Nazis vilified the paintings as “degenerate trash”. Madonna responded: “Degenerate trash, huh? I know what you mean … Look at this Rev. Donald Wildmon character and all his Moral Majority people. They’re obsessed with me - and there’s hostility to that obsession. They have a hatred for the power and fame and freedom that I have. For them to go around banning records and books and trying to get people arrested, it’s a pretty clear statement about their own obsessions. Obviously I’ve tapped into something in their unconscious that they’re very ashamed of. And since they can’t deal with it, they tell everyone it’s shameful. I was really reminded of that in the “Degenerate Art” exhibit. It’s like Hitler-they want to purify your thoughts”.

"...that would be compromising my artistic integrity"

In Bed With Madonna or Truth or Dare to give it the official title is one of my favourite films. Combining backstage footage and performance on Madonna's ground breaking Blonde Ambition Tour of 1990 the film is a fascinating insight into stardom, family and being provocative. This poster advertised a screening presented by myself and was made using old fashioned cut paste and rip techniques. The gold facade being torn away to reveal the grainy truth of performance on and off stage!

POP TARTS: Andy and Debbie slip a floppy disc

Magazines are wonderful records of a particular moment in time. This copy of NME is a gem as it features two of my favourite people: Andy and Debbie and it was exhibited in Tate Modern's Pop Life: Art in a Material World exhibition. It is a great example of Warhol playing on his own legacy while showing his desire to interact with the present. So here he creates a Warhol-style print, of the modern equivalent of Marilyn at the time, with an Amiga at the Commodore Amiga product launch press conference in 1985. Retro! AND the mag is as old as I, being published in January 1986. I don't think you would get such a pairing in music mags these days. Read the interview below:

Need an Entr'acte

An entre'acte is the interval between the acts of a play, often taking the form in music or a change in tone. Here Rene Clair made a film for the interval of Francis Picabia’s new ballet, Relâche, at the Théâtre des Champs- Elysées in Paris in 1924. Amazing to think of Duchamp, Picabia, Eric Satie and Rene Clair all working together and to see such inventive use of cinema. Pioneering use of montage and camera trickery this piece is an inspiration and proof of the power of collaboration. FOr further info: http://filmsdefrance.com/FDF_Entre_acte_rev.html

1st Fantasy

* Welcome to Fiontasia *

a hyper-zine of colliding artistic mediums and ideas, from created and found source material, to offer an interval from the norm. The term fantasia is often used in music to refer to a “composition in fanciful or irregular form often arranged with interludes and florid embellishments” and it also refers to the fantastical, the unreal, exotic and grotesque. Things to get you into the grooooove…
